There are two types of sounds penetrating into and spreading around your home: airborne sound waves and vibrations.
The sound waves originate from a wide variety of sources such as freeway traffic, audio equipment, factories, neighbors, etc.
These unwanted noises that can invade your living space, hindering your comfort and enjoyment. They are best controlled by properly air sealing your home since this type of sound is transported by air waves.
Spray foam is an effective barrier to airborne sounds. Its superior fit makes it an ideal sound proofing system, reducing airborne sound transfer through the roof, floor and walls. Outside noises such as road traffic, aircraft and trains stay outside. Inside, there are far fewer complaints about next floor noises.
Vibrations are transmitted by hard materials. An example would be a knocking on a door or foot traffic on a floor above you. These sounds are harder to control. Spray foam insulation does not carry vibrations very well due to its soft nature. The softer the material, the better its sound absorption. Accordingly, the lower density spray foams provide better sound insulation.
Another interesting detail is that sound is converted between a sound wave and vibration as it travels, and encounters obstacles. Obviously, the transformation between air wave and vibration robs energy from the sound - thus quieting it. Accordingly, foam being both soft and consisting of bubbles, absorbs sound extremely well.
